  • Independent Learning: The materials are designed to encourage self-learning. We follow a "one-minute rule," meaning it should take no more than a minute of explanation before a student can complete a worksheet on their own, fostering true independence.

Our Maths Learning Pathway:
From Early Years to GCSE

The FCL Maths programme is a structured journey composed of different strands, including Addition & Subtraction (AS), Multiplication & Division (MD), and Fractions, Decimals & Percentages (FDP). This modular design gives us huge flexibility to design a course for each individual student. 

1. Early Years & KS1 (Ages 4-7): Building a Strong Foundation

We focus on establishing basic numeracy and confidence with numbers

  • Pre-Operations (PO): Covers number writing, ordering, and counting up to 100.
  • Number Bonds (NB): Develops essential skills in adding to 3, 5, 7, and 10.
  • Addition & Subtraction (AS1): Moves onto adding and subtracting up to 10.
  • Multiplication & Division (MD1): Introduces the 2, 5, and 10 times tables and related division.

2. Junior School & KS2 (Ages 7-11): Developing Fluency for SATs

As students progress, we build core arithmetic skills and introduce more complex mathematical concepts and reasoning. A child’s learning journey may look like this: 

  • Supplementary Materials (Maths Skills): To explore key concepts further, we use 'Maths Skill' modules like SSM1 (Telling Time, Shapes & Money) and HD1 (Charts & Averages).
  • Core Learning: Students work through modules like AS3 (column addition/subtraction), MD3/MD4 (6, 7, 8 & 9x tables), and FDP1 (introduction to fractions and decimals).
  • Additional Support (Arithmetic): If a student needs more practice, we can supplement their work with targeted arithmetic modules like AS4 (adding/subtracting 2-digit numbers) and MD5 (short/long multiplication and division).
  • Reasoning: The dedicated Reasoning 1 module helps prepare students for their SATs by tackling word problems involving number, ratio, shapes, and data handling.

3. Secondary & GCSE (Ages 11-16): Mastering Advanced Maths

The programme advances to cover all necessary topics for success at secondary school and in GCSE exams. 

  • Core Skills: Modules like FDP4 (Multiplying & Dividing Fractions), SSM3 (Pythagoras, Sine & Cosine), and HD2 (Probability) ensure a deep understanding of key topics.
  • Algebra: A dedicated strand takes students from the basics in AL1 (+ve & -ve numbers, solving for the unknown) through to AL2 (simultaneous equations, graphs, factorisation) and AL3 (algebraic fractions, indices, surds).
  • GCSE & A-Level: Our final modules cover advanced topics in algebraic manipulation, quadratics, inequalities, and calculus, preparing students for grades 7-9 and beyond.

The FCL maths programme is specifically designed to meet the learning outcomes of the National Curriculum for England and Wales. The modules are carefully sequenced to follow the route of the National Curriculum, ensuring the work is relevant and supports their studies in the classroom. The objective is for all students to catch up and eventually exceed their curriculum level.
This is a very common observation that we often pick up on during the initial assessment. It usually indicates a weakness in basic number bonding. Our programme directly addresses this by starting at the foundational level, using modules like Number Bonds (NB) to ensure mental recall of addition and subtraction facts is secure before moving on.
This is unlikely because our process is designed to prevent this exact problem. We use a comprehensive series of diagnostic tests to establish the perfect starting point for every child. Correct use of these tests ensures new students start with work they are comfortable with, allowing them to get 100% correct in an appropriate time. Progress is then made in small, manageable steps to keep confidence high.
Not at all. The programme is structured to provide sufficient practice without demoralising repetition. Worksheets come in pairs; one introduces a new skill or algorithm, and the next practises that skill alongside skills covered previously. This spiral structure constantly reinforces learning and builds confidence.
For Key Stage 2 SATs, we focus on the modules covering the Year 5 and 6 curriculum, such as AS4, MD5, and FDP2. We also use the dedicated Reasoning 1 module, which focuses on the multi-step word problems that are common in SATs papers. For GCSEs, our advanced modules in Algebra ( AL1, AL2, AL3), Shape, Space & Measure (SSM3), and the specific GCSE-A Level modules cover all the required higher-level content
